Environmental Liabilities Workshop

AELERT, in conjunction with NSW EPA are offering a workshop to be held on Tuesday 17 May 2016 to provide and exchange information on the issue of how to ensure that industry pays for its remediation and clean-up costs.  A network of practitioners across Australia will be formed to continue the process of sharing information and/or developing common solutions, principally in the form of working groups in priority areas of concern.

Who should attend?

• Operations managers responsible for regulating the environmental performance of industry.
• Policy and reform practitioners interested in developing regulatory and other pathways to address the funding of environmental liabilities. 

About the Workshop

This full day workshop will be held in Sydney at the Radisson Hotel and Suites. Speaker will include:

• Maria Rosier from the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection on the Queensland Environment Protection (Chain of Responsibility) Bill.
• Adam Carrel, Director Climate Change and Sustainability, and Tim Routley, Senior Manager from Ernst and Young on the mining sector (including sector trends through to under-provisioning).
• Alan Thorn, Liberty Interational Underwriters on the potential for environmental insurance.
• A panel of regulators on the waste sector.

 The workshop will focus on:

• providing a broad understanding of the scope and dimensions of the issue;
• how to identify key challenges across jurisdictions, especially the more common challenges;
• creating a network of practitioners to continue the process of sharing information; and
• creating dedicated working groups on issues identified during the workshop.

The workshop will feature 5 speakers, a panel session, two facilitated workshop sessions and a next steps session.
